DMS Trojans advance in Class AA playoffs with win over Haywood

The Dyersburg Middle School Trojans were successful in their return to the TMSAA Football Playoffs after about a decade away, defeating Haywood 15-0 on Tuesday in the first round of the Class AA bracket in Brownsville.

Dyersburg was able to make a stop on defense during Haywood’s first drive to keep the Tomcats scoreless. The special teams then made a big play as Porter Shultz returned the ensuing punt 55 yards for the score. Celso Gonzales added the extra point to put the Trojans up 7-0 early in the first quarter.

The score remained the same until midway through the fourth quarter. DMS pulled away with a 45-yrd C.J. Briggs touchdown to extend the Trojan lead to two scores. Briggs also added the two-point conversion to push the DMS lead to 15-0 and seal the win.

DMS returns to action on Tuesday when the Trojans travel to Brighton at 6:30 p.m. in the second round of the TMSAA Class AA Football Playoffs.
