DCHS FFA coordinates projects to help in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene
SPECIAL TO THE STATE GAZETTE
Dyer County High School’s Future Farmers of America (FFA) department struggled with knowing how to help in the aftermath of Hurricane Helena.
Eddie Tharpe, FFA Alumni President, recalled the assistance that DCHS FFA provided him and his family following the April 2, 2006 tornado outbreak that destroyed his own home and farm. “I looked across my field and it wasn’t EMS, it wasn’t anybody else helping me, it was FFA, my neighbors and friends,” Tharpe recalled at a recent FFA Parent & Alumni meeting.
With this in mind, FFA Alumni, Tharpe and Allen Permenter, with DCHS FFA Ag Advisors, Garry Butler and Makenzie Moorehead-Williams, collaborated with the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA), eastern division FFA Chapters, and the University of Tennessee Extension office to find out how their local FFA Chapter can aid our eastern counterparts who have fallen victim to Helene. They reported that the most urgent need is financial, which can help farmers find and corral their lost livestock. FFA Chapters from across the state then coordinated supply drop points at local high schools, then further coordinated to deliver those items to East Tennessee on Sunday, October 13, 2024. The following items may be dropped off at the DCHS FFA Ag barn located at 1000 West Main Street, Newbern, TN on or before 10/12/2024:
New or used fencing supplies (wire, electric, T-posts, etc)
New or used livestock feeding supplies (troughs, feed, buckets, etc)
New or used fencing tools (gloves, hammers, fence staples, etc)
New or used chain saws
New or used generators
Working water pumps
Other useful items (shop rags, fuel cans, pet carriers, Tractor supply gift cards)
Other local FFA Chapter drop points include:
Covington FFA - Ag Department
Munford FFA - Ag Department
Riverside FFA - Ag Department
