Northview volleyball sweeps Inman to take sectional title, state bid
Heading into the TMSAA Class A Section 7 Tournament on their home floor sporting an unbeaten 16-0 record, the Northview volleyball team cruised through the semifinals in two sets on Thursday before defeating Paris Inman in straight sets to win the TMSAA Sectional Tournament for a second straight season.
The Lady Choctaws from Newbern had a bye in the quarterfinals then faced off against Community Moontessori. Northview easily dispatched their semifinal opponent, winning the first set 25-5 then taking the second frame 25-2 to advance to the sectional tournament final.
Paris Inman met up with Three Oaks in the other semifinal for one of the more competitive games of the tournament. The Lady Choctaws from Upper Finley Road won the first set 25-15 but Inman battled back to take the second frame 25-23. In a nail-biting third set, Inman took a 16-14 victory to take take the set and advance to the sectional final.
Northview, having only lost two sets all season, continued its hot streak with a 25-8 win in the opening set. The Lady Choctaws then won their second straight sectional title with an identical 25-8 victory in set two to punch their ticket to the state tournament for the second straight season.
Northview Head Coach Elysse Joy was named the Sectional Coach of the Year while Kate Benedetto received the Tournament Most Valuable Player Award.
The Lady Choctaws now advance to the TMSAA Class A State Tournament and are waiting to see who they will face in the first game of pool play, which begins on Thursday, Oct. 11 at Brentwood.
Northview does know the Lady Choctaws will play at 10 a.m., 2 p.m., and at 4:40 p.m. in the Brentwood High School Auxiliary Gymnasium. In those games, the Lady Choctaws will face the winners from Sections 1, 5, and 3 in that order.
