Dyer County was able to get a lead early in the District 13AA Play-in Game on Thursday evening in Newbern then held off Obion County Central for a 7-3 win to open the 2024 postseason.

“Getting ahead early and making sure that we were able to maintain the lead (was the key tonight),” Dyer County Head Coach Stephen Goodman said. “They were trying to come back on us and definitely were doing a good job of it.

“We had a couple key goals in the second half to make a big difference. We were able to hang on.”

Dyer County was able to take a 5-2 lead at the half thanks to two first-half goals from Anna Hampton as well as single scores from Lennon Brooks, Blakely Johns, and Peyton Murphy. But, the two Lady Rebels goals kept Central within striking distance at the half.

Central cut further into the Dyer County lead in the second half with a goal in the 50th minute to make it a 5-3 game in favor of the orange and white.

The Lady Choctaws were able to get that goal back in the 69th minute when a foal in the box led to a Brooks penalty kick.

Dyer County then tacked on a second Murphy goal in the 76th minute to seal the win for the Lady Choctaws and keep their season alive.

With the win, the Lady Choctaws advance to the District 13AA semifinals where they will face top-seeded South Gibson on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. in Medina.

“You've got to get out there and play like it's your last game ever,” Goodman added. “And, maybe it won't be.”
