SPECIAL TO THE STATE GAZETTE

At the September 10 meeting of the Dyer County Historical Society, the topic will be area communities, some of which no longer exist. We want visitors to the Dyer County Museum to come and bring their memories of these communities, those that we know today and those that, like Tiger Tail, are just a memory. The meeting begins at 5 p.m. and will be held at the Professional Development Center, 305 College Street in downtown Dyersburg. The museum, located inside the PDC, will be open. The public is encouraged to attend.

Dyer County has many small communities that are home to a large portion of our citizens. Most of us know about Tigrett, Finley, Fowlkes, Lenox, Bogota, RoEllen, Tatumville, Bonicord, Unionville and Bruceville. However, there is a history of many other communities that many people may not know about. Some are detailed in past publications such as the State Gazette. The Historical Society has a collection of newspapers dating back to the mid 1920s. Many of those issues mention of communities that no longer appear on a map.

One of our modern industries has used the name of one of those communities to create a brand of their mustard. Develey Mustard and Condiments uses the name “Tiger Tail” on their series of mustard, ketchup, and dressing. The name was the result of Develey’s founder, Michael Durach, showing an interest in the history of Dyer County when he chose to build the company’s only North American facility in Dyersburg in 2017. When presented with an old map of Dyer County, Durach searched for a local location that he might use for his brand label. Tiger Tail fit the bill.
