Security Bank sponsored a day for special needs children at the Dyer County Fair on Wednesday morning, September 4. The children enjoyed rides and were treated to pizza and cookies for lunch. Parents and area schools came with the children for a day of fun.

Fair Board Member and coordinator for the event Sandy Baker stated, “This is our biggest group to date. We’ve got right at 400 folks with special needs from every school district—Dyersburg, Dyer County, Lauderdale County, and Lake County.”

Special needs teachers and many student volunteers helped the children, taking them on rides, holding their hands, and when needed, giving them hugs. Baker said, “We ask our volunteers to show the kids smiles.” It was obvious that the students needed no reminders.

Baker thanked the schools for their cooperation and participation. She added, “The school system provides us buses to get out here. A big thanks to Alan Cook of the Dyer County School system for taking on that challenge. We’ve got over 20 buses here.”

Home schooled children were not left out, Baker said. “We’ve got some parents who come in on their own and bring their special needs children.”

Baker elaborated on the fun. “We have rides. They get to see the exhibits. They get to see the crop building. It’s very educational for the students as well as fun.” The children got to see a pig race, and the Torres Family Circus put on a show.

Baker thanked Security Bank for sponsoring the event, and she thanked the Shave Ice Barn for handing out free samples to the kids.

She concluded, “We’ve had the best weather and the best day, and we’re real excited to host these 400 students.”
