There’s a new White in charge at DSCC

One of the biggest stories this past winter involved longtime head coach Robert White stepping down from the helm of the Dyersburg State program following a very successful and winning career.

In fact, Robert White’s tenure was one which changed the game for the Eagle program and turned it into a contender and a ticket worth purchasing on the weekends which saw DSCC hosting a conference series.

That’s why his stepping down felt like such a blow to the program and, I’d say, to the school and community.

This past year, interim head coach Tyler Brown did a spectacular job with what he had, taking the Eagles to the brink of the JUCO World Series.

It’s definitely been an up-and-down year for the Eagle baseball program which has continued into the summer.

Thankfully, this latest move is, in my opinion, another one of those ups.

Last week, Dyersburg State announced the school’s longtime softball coach, George White, has been named as the school’s new baseball coach.

While I do hate it some for the softball program which will lose a coach who built the program up to a contender just like his twin brother did with baseball, I love it for the baseball Eagles.

White is one of the best coaches around the area and I look for what started with his brother to continue through him.

And, dare I say, even improve.

If you read the article Dyersburg State released you have to be happy to hear about what he has been able to do with his athletes when it comes to keeping their grades in line and getting them to the next level.

There are times when a small college coach’s job can be a thankless one. As someone who went to Dyersburg State and has worked during the course of my time here at the State Gazette to help promote our local two-year institution, let me make sure and say thank you, George White, for helping rebuild a struggling softball program.

Now, for writers and fans like myself, I am very eager to see what George White can do with a team which already has seen success as early as the year before he takes over.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see another run like we had this past season with the Eagle baseball team.
