A month following the completion of the 2024 season which saw the Dyer County baseball team reach the TSSAA Class AAA State Tournament for the second year in a row, a pair of Choctaw seniors have been recognized for their efforts by the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association with selections to the Class AAA All-State Team.
Dyer County’s Kole Fenton and Trey Tarkington were among 25 players across the state selected to the TBCA Class AAA All-State Team.
Fenton led the team in multiple offensive categories, including batting average as he sported a .400 average through the season. Fenton collected 56 hits with 15 doubles, four triples, and four home runs while driving in 39 and scoring the same amount himself.
“Kole is one of the few that can say is a two time all-state shortstop,” Dyer County Head Coach Derek Hinson said. “This speaks volumes to his work ethic and dedication to being the best player he can be.
“Kole is the type of player that doesn’t come around very often and has set a standard that someone on our team will have to step up tremendously to. Coach (Chase) Jones has spent relentless hours with Kole since 8th grade pushing him to be the best and that only speaks highly about our staff but also how the culture of our program trusts our coaching.”
Tarkington was the ace of a staff which saw him go 5-2 over the course of his senior season. The Senior pitcher sported a 1.63 ERA with 73 strikeouts in 51.2 innings pitched.
At the plate, Tarkington was second in batting average on the team with a .374 average. Tarkington utilized a patient approach at the plate, drawing 34 walks while getting 37 hits.
“Trey is another player that has meant so much to this program and is very deserving of this accolade,” Hinson said. “Trey’s work ethic is second to none and he comes everyday to get better.
“I’m so glad that his hard work has paid off. We will miss Trey on the mound but also at the plate. I got to coach Trey for two years and he is another player that I will talk about for a long time. Trey has followed the standard but also he has set a new standard for our young guys to follow as well. He is a special human being and can’t wait to see what the future holds for Trey.”
