Where is Sal the ALS Gal?
Where is Sal the ALS Gal?
In my mind, I have been so busy. I am still working on spreading the Light and Love to my corner of the world. September was so tough. I lost three weeks to the nastiest sinus infection I’ve ever had coupled with ALS. It took a toil on me. With motor neuron diseases, you have plateaus and dips or valleys. I’ve been dipping and no back row, not skinny dipping! I am losing more mobility on my left side. Two fingers and a chair. That’s me so watch out! My first symptom was muscles atrophied in my shoulder 16 years ago. God has been so good to me. Sixteen years. Most of my PALS ( People with ALS ) only live 3-5 years and 1 out of 20 PALS get 20+ years. I just finished my book that tells the story of how my life has changed for the good with an ALS death sentence. I will put a link for it. It will be officially published 11-17-24!
One of my ventures that helps me continue to fight is the Autumn March for ALS Awareness Walk/5K. This was the 8th year that I have been the race director. Crazy for sure and every year there's been some type of blip. It is the perfectly imperfect race, but it has been so fruitful and spreading light and love. As I had said I lost 3 weeks in September and I was aiming to do most of the prep for the race before the third Saturday of October. This race is the first 5k that our little city ever had but the proceeds were used for a child outreach at our local Union mission. It was called the Mission March. Eight years ago we turned it into the Autumn March for ALS awareness. This year just as all the others was beautiful to watch the Miracles of love pull this off. That is a gift from being the girl in the chair. It's getting to be very observant and watch how God uses a girl with two fingers and a scooter to bring people together under the love of God and Christ. What does the Bible say about love? That's right front row students Love Never Fails. It doesn't. Every year God adds to my army of angels to help continue to bring more light into our little community not only about a disease but about in spite of a disease good things can happen and that's how God works. We have given away so many scholarships to students who are headed out for their season in college. The thing that I look at the most about the scholarships are the essays the students write . They tell me how they will continue to be a light in their lives after college wherever they are planted. You would not believe the amazing young people that are out there. Right in this little town there are little lights that are growing and eager to do the good. I know that one day we all go to our Eternal rest but what I want people to understand is you can leave this world a better place than you found it. Don't be angry about your situation. The key is to look past those situations and to find some way to love the people around you. I know there's so many that are frustrated about life’s problems and people who you feel don't do the right thing but how do you teach them? You don't. You show them how to love despite all of the angry and hateful barriers that are in the world that we live in. There will always be barriers to good but love always prevails.
This year's race was a thing of beauty just like all the others that have preceded it. You see the man on the walker who did the two mile walk. You have the ones that do their very first race. It just puts that spark into them to begin a journey of health and running races to support important causes that the world needs. You see the children having such a wonderful day and running being active. It is a day of love. Inspiration is everywhere you look. Love and kindness walks the streets and runs with us that day. It helps us to be the good. We had four more racers this year than last year. I’ll take it! God willing, I will see you on the third Saturday of October 2025. Save the date October 18th 2025.
