Community Outreach Specialist Patrick Kennedy from the Veterans Affairs division in Memphis came to the Dyersburg Community Center on October 25 and spoke to a coalition of area veterans from every branch of the armed services. Dyer County Veterans Services Officer Benny Spain explained that the coalition brings resources and agencies together to find solutions for issues confronting veterans. “Right now,” he said, “our priority is to combat veteran suicide and mental health issues.” Attending the meeting were area veterans, law enforcement, emergency services, health professionals, and others related to the issues veterans face. Spain said that the coalition is striving to help all veterans and to strengthen the organization. He noted, “This is our sixth meeting, and our goal is to establish a crisis fund for veterans and families…through donations and fundraisers.”
