Bestselling author and fan club vow to aid local flood victims
Bestselling author Nora Roberts is known for adding a little heart to her stories.
Her fans, as devoted to helping others as they are to Roberts, have also proven to wear their hearts on their sleeves and reach out in times of disaster.
One of Roberts' fan clubs, ADWOFF - or A Day Without French Fries - donated funds matched by Roberts to residents in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina devastated the area. Soon, residents of Dyer County affected by the recent flooding of the Forked Deer River will have the chance to witness that heart and generosity firsthand with a pledge by ADWOFF members to raise funds to benefit the Disaster Recovery Services of Dyer County.
The club first had its eye on the Nashville area, but when organizers learned that a fellow ADWOFF member lived in Dyersburg, they posted photos of the Southtown devastation and threw down the gauntlet.
"I offer you the same challenge I did with Katrina - as you take a sip of the soda pop to your left, and pick up that book placed to your right, as you get up to prepare a hot bath ... ask yourself what you can go without so that you can send money to help those in need," reads the site. "Remember, even a dollar makes a difference. Nora is willing to match what we collect -- up to $100,000. Let's do her proud. Let's do ourselves proud. Let's help our friend and sister-of-the-heart, Cindy, in her neighborhood's time of greatest need. Dig into your change drawers. Check the pockets of your clothes. The bottom of your purses. Whatever you can send to this cause would be appreciated."
Impressed by the fact that DRS is an organization of volunteers with no administrative fees, ADWOFF officials have chosen it as the venue to aid local flood victims - ensuring that all funds raised by their club directly benefit flood victims.
The fan club has raised $3,000 to date, with a Nora Roberts spokesperson verifying that Roberts has agreed to contribute enough to raise the donation to $10,000.
